The Maze of the Muse

Dunstan Ward

Australian producer Ian Iveson and director Stephen Wallace have been in France recently looking for finance for a film based on the novel 'The Maze of the Muse' by Larry Buttrose (who also wrote the film script).

The film is set in Barcelona in 1976 and is about a young Australian poet who comes to Barcelona in order to meet Robert Graves on Majorca. He has previously arranged the meeting by mail from Australia but is unable to contact Graves from Barcelona when he arrives and is unable to get a ferry to Majorca. The young poet finds his own 'muse' in Barcelona while he is waiting.

Larry Buttrose actually did meet Robert Graves on Majorca at that time (Graves was by then unwell) and wrote about the encounter in detail in the short story on which the film script and novel is loosely based. In the film, however, the young poet never gets to meet Graves.

If all goes well the film is set to be shot in Barcelona next year.
