Conference in Buffalo, 'Robert Graves in America' for the year 2000 is announced!

At the last meeting of the Robert Graves Trust held in October of this year, plans were revealed to organise the next international Robert Graves conference in Buffalo. The general topic is expected to be 'Robert Graves in America'. The original plan that was mentioned at the conference of holding a conference in Rome on the subject of the Historical Novel has been put back to 2002. Our sources tell us that millenial and Papal celebrations planned for the year 2000 in Rome make conference planning prohibitive. More specific details about both conferences will follow. I.F.

The White Goddess conference proceedings are in preparation.

Nearly everyone who delivered a paper at the White Goddess conference held this past summer at Hulme Hall in Manchester submitted a paper for publication in the conference proceedings. I have recently printed or photocopied all the papers that I have received and estimate the stack of paper at something approaching 500 sheets! That's a hefty manuscript. With an introduction and an index the size of the book will grow very rapidly. Unfortunately, few publishers, these days, are willing to publish such lengthy books. Grevel Lindop and I are going to have some difficult decisions to make as we attempt to organise papers that somehow reflect the spirit of the conference into a more manageable size. I expect that we will have to limit ourselves to approximately 80,000 words for the entire manuscript (roughly twice the length of this issue of Gravesiana). Papers not selected for the book of proceedings will automatically be considered for publication in Gravesiana.

Patrick Quinn's edited collection of papers from the 1995 conferences is due to appear this summer from Associated University Presses and Joan Fiol is working hard at convincing the board of the University of the Balearic Islands press to publish a second selection of essays from the centenary conferences. More to follow! I.F.

Robert Graves Day School Announced

Dr. Jem Poster of Kellog College, Oxford (from the school of continuing education) has announced a Robert Graves Day School that will be held on October 30, 1999. The speakers will be: Richard Perceval Graves, Patrick Quinn, Robert Davis and Ian Firla. More information will be printed here in future issues. I.F.

St. John's College Robert Graves Collection OnLine

I have recently finished preparing an expanded and more accurate catalogue of the Graves papers at St John's College, Oxford. That catalogue is on-line and can, of course, be found on the Trust web site www.sjc.ox.ac.uk/graves/graves.html. This location shall continue to be updated over the next several months as I carry on the work of identifying the contents of the archive and describing the individual collections. In some cases, I have been able to provide something of an item-level description of the holdings.

The book collection is due to be revamped next along with the continual revisions to the web site! Keep checking on the progress and please write with any comments or suggestions for improvement. I.F.
